A. Health Gateways - Start here

· MEDLINEplus * An excellent site to start looking for health information. Medical information from the National Library of Medicine on specific diseases and conditions, and drug information. Also has consumer health information from the National Institutes of Health, a medical encyclopedia, medical dictionaries, lists of hospitals and physicians, clinical trials. Information in English, Spanish, and other languages.

· Healthfinder * A gateway to information from the National Institutes of Medicine and links to hundreds of reliable consumer health sites selected and evaluated for quality and reliability by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services.

· NOAH: New York Online Access to Health * NOAH seeks to provide high quality full-text health information for consumers that is accurate, timely, relevant and unbiased. NOAH is bilingual and currently supports English and Spanish. Search by health topics or words. The NOAH partners are The City University of New York, The Metropolitan New York Library Council, The New York Academy of Medicine and The New York Public Library

· National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) is a federation of voluntary health organizations serving people with rare or "orphan" disorders and disabilities. A rare or "orphan" disease affects fewer than 200,000 people in the United States. There are more than 6,000 rare disorders that, taken together, affect approximately 25 million Americans. The web site contains a searchable database of understandable information on rare disorders for over 1,100 diseases.

B. Drug and Pharmacy Information

· MEDLINEplus * The National Library of Medicine provides access to this guide to more than 9,000 prescription and over-the-counter medications provided from two drug resources MedMaster??, a product of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and the USP DI® Advice for the Patient® ?, a product of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). Also on this page, the Food and Drug Administration provides late-breaking news on: Consumer Drug Information, Warnings, Recalls, and other Drug Information and Safety Information Summaries from MedWatch for years: 2002, 2003, 2004

 C. Find a Doctor Information

· AMA Physician Select Online Doctor Finder: From the American Medical Association. Brief biographical information on many licensed physicians in the U.S. and its possessions. Includes address, phone number, medical specialty, medical school attended, year licensed, type of practice and board certification. Search by name or medical specialty.  

D. Medical Search Engines

· HonSelect  A search tool from Health on the Net Foundation, a not-for-profit International Swiss organization. HON's mission is to guide lay persons or non-medical users and medical practitioners to useful and reliable online medical and health information. Research topics, medical terminology, and medical illustrations and health news. Content in English and French.

· MedHunt  A search engine from HonSelect that finds medical documents. Can search in English or French and restrict to geographic domain, example, Europe, Asia or document type, educational, organization, military.

· National Cancer Institute * Information on cancer topics, research, clinical trials and cancer news.

· Centers for Disease Control and Prevention * Information on topics with national health implications, including infectious diseases,emergency preparedness and safety, workplace health and safety, traveler?s information, birth defects, disabilities, diseases and conditions, environmental health, vaccines and immunizations, genetics. English and Spanish.

· familydoctor.org* The web site for the American Academy of Family Physicians with patient information for women, men, seniors and families, and healthy living articles and tools. English and Spanish.

· HIV InSite * Comprehensive, up-to-date information on HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention and policy from the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine

· Mayo Clinic * Reliable information for a healthier life from Mayo Clinic.

· Medem: Connecting Physicians and Patients * Representing over 50 medical associations, this site provides an online medical library, articles and news on medical topics and offers online tools to connect with physicians online (if your physician offers the service).

F. MENTAL HEALTH SITES

· National Institute of Mental Health Part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Highlights include information about "signs, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment for anxiety disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, depression, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, social phobia (social anxiety disorder).

· Also on this site "Real Men: Real Depression" A campaign to raise awareness and provide resources for men with depression.

· NAMI  An advocacy and support group for consumers, friends and families of persons with severe mental illness. Information by illness, online discussion groups, legal information, a national hotline, advocacy and social action, and links to local support groups. Support also for families of children and adolescents, college students, and a multicultural action center.

· Healthfinder for Kids Health web sites suitable for children, includes Cool and Uncool Stuff, Games, Safe Surfing. Extensive and well organized from the U. S. Department of the Health and Human Services.

· KidsHealth * From the Nemours Foundation. Health information for parents, children and teens.

· American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Aims to help parents and families understand developmental, behaviorial, emotional and mental disorders affecting children and adolescents. Helpful Facts for Families Sheets are available in English, French, Spanish, German, Polish and Icelandic.
